Light switches as modular product lines

Berker is a brand of the Hager group.

Starting point
Development of a scalable platform to reduce variants and strengthen brand structure.

Challenge
High variant proliferation combined with the requirement for consistency and efficiency.

Approach
Definition of a modular product architecture with clear differentiation rules.

Result
Reduced complexity, more efficient production, and strengthened brand identity.

A modular switch system with a single generative principle: the spherical segment. Derived from the brand guideline "Berker – in its own way", all switch and socket inserts are based on this geometry, creating a formal consistency across the entire range.

The individual frames meet the standardised centre pieces flush, forming one continuous surface with them. In the higher-priced aluminium series, an extruded profile delivers high-quality metal surfaces with simple tooling: market differentiation, manufacturing efficiency and design quality from the same decision.

The S.1 base range follows the same logic: a curved surface that runs out straight on two opposite sides and as a spherical section on the other two – distinctiveness from a single geometric decision.

Gabor Lengyel and Prof. Stefan Lengyel jointly led the project as independent designers. Lines B.1 and B.3 were designed by Gabor Lengyel, who also conceived the surface geometry of the S.1 base range.

Berker B.3 – the first frame to be manufactured using the aluminium extrusion process.
